Adult Flat Felting a Botanical Wall Hanging: May 22nd 6:30 pm
This is a fun, laid-back "art experience" that brings adults together and allows you to play with ART! Needle felting is addicting and knowing the right techniques and tools of the trade makes it even more enjoyable! Flat felting is a technique used to create flat, fabric-like pieces of felt using wool fibers, typically through needle felting (or wet felting), where the fibers are manipulated and fused together to form a cohesive material. We will be exploring flat felting with the needle felting technique and each participant will go home with a beautiful woolen wall hanging.
Thursday, May 22nd, we will be hosting local fiber artist Farren Maillie and learning needle felting. Needle felting is a process that sculpts wool into any shape you can imagine. In this workshop, we will learn how to shape our wool into natural, botanical wildflowers and all things related to abstract wildflowers. We will be "flat felting". Rather than felting in 3D, we will be using a substrate onto which we will craft a scene using wool. Wool fibers are covered with scales. In needle felting we use special barbed needles that lock the scales of the fiber together when we intersect the wools by poking them and interlocking them. What this looks like in "real time" is stabbing fluffy, colorful wool over and over with sharp needles. But, no worries...we have finger protectors and lots of experience to guide you! Our favorite fiber artist, Farren, will be using a variety of fibers for this project. This is a beginner friendly class.
